SIBO & IMO
Support healthy gut function
Tired of being bloated, gassy and reacting to food?
Do you experience bloating after meals, excessive gas, abdominal discomfort, nausea, diarrhoea or constipation? These symptoms can be frustrating and may be associated with changes in gut motility, digestion or the balance of microorganisms in the digestive tract.
At Enhanced Vitality, our Williamstown naturopaths support patients experiencing Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth (SIBO), Intestinal Methane Overgrowth (IMO), IBS and other complex digestive concerns.
We take the time to understand your symptoms, health history and individual circumstances, helping identify factors that may be contributing to your symptoms and developing a personalised approach to support healthier gut function.
What are SIBO and IMO?
Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth (SIBO) occurs when there is an abnormal increase in the number and/or types of bacteria in the small intestine. The small intestine normally contains far fewer microorganisms than the large intestine. When this balance changes, fermentation and other processes can contribute to symptoms such as bloating, abdominal discomfort, gas and changes in bowel habits.
Intestinal Methane Overgrowth (IMO) is different from SIBO. It occurs when methane-producing microorganisms, known as methanogens, are present in excessive amounts within the digestive tract. Methane production is particularly associated with slower intestinal transit and constipation, although symptoms can vary between individuals.
SIBO and IMO can affect digestion and gut function in different ways. The symptoms can also overlap with other digestive conditions, which is why a thorough assessment is important.
What are the signs and symptoms of SIBO?
SIBO can be associated with a range of digestive symptoms, including:
- Bloating, particularly after meals
- Excessive gas or burping
- Abdominal pain or discomfort
- Diarrhoea or loose stools
- Changes in bowel habits
- Food-related digestive symptoms
- Fatigue or brain fog
- Nausea or reduced appetite in some people
- Nutritional deficiencies in some cases
Symptoms can vary considerably between people, and having these symptoms does not necessarily mean you have SIBO.
What are the signs and symptoms of IMO?
IMO is particularly associated with constipation and slower bowel transit. Symptoms may include:
- Constipation or infrequent bowel movements
- Bloating and abdominal fullness
- Excessive gas
- Abdominal discomfort
- Hard or difficult-to-pass stools
- A feeling of incomplete evacuation
- Slow or sluggish bowel movements
- Reflux or indigestion in some people
- Changes in symptoms after eating
SIBO and IMO can occur alongside other digestive conditions, including IBS, so symptoms need to be considered in the context of your overall health.
What about hydrogen sulphide overgrowth?
Hydrogen sulphide (H₂S) is a gas produced by certain microorganisms in the digestive tract. While hydrogen and methane are commonly measured during SIBO/IMO breath testing, hydrogen sulphide breath testing is not currently available as a routine clinical test in Australia, and validated diagnostic criteria are still evolving.
Some people with symptoms such as bloating, abdominal discomfort, diarrhoea, gas or food-related digestive reactions may have a symptom pattern that warrants consideration of hydrogen sulphide as a possible contributor.
Where appropriate, our naturopaths may consider your symptoms, digestive history and other test results, including comprehensive stool testing where clinically relevant, when assessing possible microbial imbalances.
Depending on your individual circumstances, personalised support may include nutrition and dietary strategies, targeted herbal support and, where appropriate, coordination with your GP regarding medical treatment options.
Because hydrogen sulphide testing is not currently available as a validated routine breath test in Australia, we interpret the overall clinical picture rather than relying on a single test result.
What can contribute to SIBO and IMO?
SIBO and IMO can develop for a range of reasons. Factors that may contribute include:
- Slower intestinal motility
- Previous gastrointestinal infection or food poisoning
- Constipation and altered bowel transit
- Certain medications, including some acid-suppressing medicines
- Previous abdominal or intestinal surgery
- Structural changes or narrowing within the digestive tract
- Conditions that affect gut movement or digestion
- Coeliac disease and other gastrointestinal conditions
- Diabetes and other conditions that can affect intestinal motility
- Reduced digestive function associated with underlying health conditions
Identifying possible contributing factors is an important part of supporting long-term digestive health, particularly because symptoms may recur when underlying factors are not addressed.
How can naturopathy help with SIBO and IMO?
If you are experiencing SIBO, IMO or related digestive symptoms, personalised naturopathic care may provide support for healthy digestion, bowel function and nutritional status.
During your initial consultation, our naturopaths take a detailed health and digestive history, including your symptoms, bowel habits, diet, medications, lifestyle and relevant health history.
Where appropriate, we may recommend further investigation or suggest that you speak with your GP or other medical practitioner about appropriate assessment.
Depending on your symptoms and individual circumstances, investigations may include breath testing, pathology or other gastrointestinal investigations.
Testing is not necessary for everyone. If further investigation may be helpful, we’ll explain the options and help you understand what may be appropriate for you.
Your personalised naturopathic support may include:
- Nutrition and meal planning tailored to your symptoms and nutritional needs
- Dietary strategies to help manage bloating, gas and other digestive symptoms
- Low FODMAP strategies and structured food reintroduction where appropriate
- Supporting comfortable, regular bowel movements and healthy gut motility
- Targeted nutritional and herbal support
- Lifestyle and stress management
- Addressing individual factors that may contribute to ongoing digestive symptoms
Dietary changes can be useful for managing symptoms, but long-term unnecessary restriction is not the goal. Where a low FODMAP approach is appropriate, it is generally used as a short-term dietary strategy followed by structured reintroduction and personalisation, rather than as a permanent restrictive diet.
Our approach considers both your current symptoms and the factors that may be contributing to ongoing digestive dysfunction, with the aim of supporting healthier gut function and helping you feel more comfortable.
We tailor your support to your symptoms, nutritional needs and individual circumstances.
What our patients say 🤍

"Helena's evidence-based approach is rigorous and effective. She is very thorough and incredibly knowledgeable in complimentary medicine. I have had results with her over a period of a few months that doctors and specialists were unable to achieve with fifteen years of treatment and thousands of dollars spent. I wish I'd been referred to her a long time ago, and would encourage anyone to make an appointment. My experience with her has totally changed my view of naturopathy, and I hope she will be a part of my health journey for many years to come. She's extraordinary." ~ Denby
