Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS)
& support healthy digestive function
Is IBS affecting your everyday life?
Do you experience abdominal pain, bloating, constipation, diarrhoea or unpredictable bowel habits? IBS symptoms can be frustrating and disruptive, particularly when they affect eating, work, social activities and everyday life.
At Enhanced Vitality, our Williamstown naturopaths support patients experiencing IBS and related digestive symptoms. We take the time to understand your symptoms, health history and individual circumstances, helping you understand the factors that may be contributing to your digestive discomfort.
What is Irritable Bowel Syndrome?
Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) is a common digestive disorder involving abdominal pain associated with changes in bowel habits.
IBS can present differently from person to person. Some people experience predominantly constipation, while others experience diarrhoea or a combination of both.
What can contribute to IBS symptoms?
IBS is complex and there is no single cause that explains every person’s symptoms.
A range of factors may influence IBS and digestive symptoms, including:
- Changes in the gut microbiome
- Altered gut motility and bowel function
- Gut infections and SIBO
- Food intolerances or individual food triggers
- Changes to the intestinal barrier
- Digestive function
- Stress and the gut-brain connection
- Changes in the way the digestive system responds to food, stretching or other stimuli
For some people, digestive symptoms may also occur alongside conditions such as dysbiosis, constipation or other gastrointestinal disorders.
What are the different types of IBS?
IBS symptoms can vary considerably between people. The main patterns are:
- IBS with constipation (IBS-C): constipation is the predominant bowel pattern.
- IBS with diarrhoea (IBS-D): diarrhoea is the predominant bowel pattern.
- IBS with mixed bowel habits (IBS-M): constipation and diarrhoea occur at different times.
Some people also experience significant bloating, abdominal discomfort, gas or bowel urgency, regardless of their predominant bowel pattern.
Symptoms can fluctuate over time, with periods when digestion feels relatively settled and other times when symptoms become more noticeable.
How can naturopathy help with IBS?
If you are experiencing ongoing digestive symptoms, personalised naturopathic care may provide support for managing IBS symptoms and improving digestive function.
During your initial consultation, our naturopaths take a detailed health and digestive history and assess your individual symptoms, diet, lifestyle and circumstances.
Where appropriate, we may discuss further investigation or recommend that you speak with your GP or other medical practitioner about appropriate medical assessment.
Depending on your symptoms and health history, this may include investigations such as SIBO breath testing, comprehensive stool testing, pathology or other investigations relevant to your symptoms.
Testing isn’t necessary for everyone. If further investigation may be helpful, we’ll explain the options and help you understand what may be appropriate for your individual situation.
Your personalised naturopathic support may include practical guidance around nutrition, meal patterns, digestive function, bowel regularity, lifestyle and stress, together with nutritional or herbal support where appropriate.
Rather than following a one-size-fits-all IBS diet, we focus on an approach that is appropriate for your symptoms, nutritional needs and lifestyle.
Our approach is tailored to you and designed to support your overall digestive health.
