Constipation
& support healthy bowel function
Understand what may be contributing to your constipation
Do you struggle with infrequent bowel movements, hard stools, straining or feeling like you haven’t fully emptied your bowels? Constipation can be uncomfortable, frustrating and may affect how you feel throughout the day.
At Enhanced Vitality, our Williamstown naturopaths support people experiencing constipation and other digestive symptoms. We take the time to understand your individual symptoms, bowel habits, diet and lifestyle, and consider what may be contributing to your digestive discomfort.
What is constipation?
Constipation can involve infrequent bowel movements, hard or dry stools, difficulty passing stools or a feeling of incomplete emptying.
Everyone’s bowel habits are different, so there isn’t one frequency of bowel movements that is considered normal for everyone. The consistency of your stools, how easily they pass and whether you feel completely emptied are also important.
Constipation can be occasional or ongoing and may occur alongside other digestive symptoms such as bloating, abdominal discomfort, gas or changes in bowel habits.
If constipation is new, severe or persistent, or occurs with symptoms such as blood in the stool, unexplained weight loss or significant abdominal pain, medical assessment is recommended.
What can contribute to constipation?
There isn’t one cause of constipation that applies to everyone. It may be influenced by one or several factors, including:
- Diet and fluid intake: Low fibre intake, dietary changes or not drinking enough fluids
- Gut motility and bowel habits: Slower intestinal movement, regularly ignoring the urge to go or changes to your usual routine
- Digestive conditions: IBS and other gastrointestinal conditions can be associated with constipation
- Gut overgrowths and infections: Intestinal methanogen overgrowth (IMO) is associated with constipation and slower bowel transit, while certain parasitic infections may also affect bowel function
- Medications and supplements: Some medications and supplements can affect bowel movements
- Gut microbiome: Changes in the composition or activity of microorganisms in the digestive tract
- Lifestyle factors: Reduced physical activity, travel or changes in daily routine
- Hormonal factors: Hormonal changes can influence bowel function for some people
- Stress and the gut-brain connection: Stress can affect digestion and gut motility
This is why simply increasing fibre or relying on laxatives may not address what is contributing to your constipation.
Understanding your individual symptoms and identifying relevant contributing factors can help guide a more personalised approach.
Signs you may be experiencing constipation
Constipation can look different from person to person. You may experience:
- Bowel movements that are less frequent than usual
- Hard, dry or pellet-like stools
- Straining to pass a bowel movement
- A feeling that you haven't completely emptied your bowels
- Bloating or abdominal discomfort
- Changes in your usual bowel pattern
If constipation is persistent, recurring or accompanied by other digestive symptoms, it can be useful to explore what may be contributing to the change in bowel function.
How we investigate constipation
At your initial naturopathic consultation, we take a detailed history of your bowel movements, stool consistency, digestive symptoms, diet, lifestyle, medications and relevant health history.
We may also use appropriate in-house assessments and, when indicated, recommend further testing.
Depending on your individual symptoms, this may include:
- Digestive or functional testing
- Breath testing where appropriate
- Comprehensive stool analysis where appropriate
- Relevant pathology testing
Testing isn’t necessary for everyone. We consider your symptoms and individual circumstances before recommending whether further investigation may be useful.
Once we have a clearer picture of what may be contributing to your constipation, we can develop a personalised nutrition and naturopathic support plan.
Personalised support for constipation
Your personalised plan may include practical guidance around:
- Fibre and food choices to support comfortable, regular bowel movements
- Fluid intake and hydration
- Bowel regularity and healthy bowel habits
- Digestive and gut health support
- Identifying relevant food triggers
- Lifestyle and movement
- Stress management and the gut-brain connection
- Practitioner-guided nutritional supplements where appropriate
Our approach is individual rather than one-size-fits-all. The aim is to help you understand your bowel symptoms and give you practical strategies that fit into your everyday life.
