What is Candida?

Candidiasis is a general term for yeast and fungal infections, most commonly caused by several species of Candida, the most predominant being Candida albicans. Candida and other yeasts are a common non-pathogenic organism in human microflora that can affect areas such as the gut, genitals, skin, throat and mouth. Opportunistic overgrowth of candida and other yeasts are associated with a switch to pathogenesis, where it may trigger inflammation, immune suppression and localised tissue irritation and damage, including increased intestinal permeability and skin/mucosal irritation in affected areas.
Yeast overgrowths can be difficult to treat, as they form a biofilm around themselves, allowing immune evasion. Also, fungal cell walls contain mannose glycoprotein, which is immunosuppressive, allowing it to locally adapt to the conditions of the host, playing a role in fungal persistence. Also, prolonged treatment with anti-fungal medications can cause candida and other yeasts to adapt and make them resistant to treatment.

What Are Some Yeast Overgrowth Symptoms?

How Do You Get A Yeast Overgrowth?

Generally, a healthy immune system keeps Candida and other yeast levels under control. However modern diets and lifestyles can deplete your immune system. When your delicate balance of bowel flora is disturbed, it can create an environment where yeasts thrive.

Factors That Can Cause Yeast Overgrowth

Yeast Overgrowth Treatments

When a yeast overgrowth takes hold, it excretes harmful toxins that circulate throughout the body, further weakening the immune system and creating havoc. It can also lead to a condition called ‘Leaky Gut Syndrome’, which causes food intolerances and other health problems. A yeast overgrowth can become persistent, and is certainly something you’d hope to avoid. If you have an infection it’s important to get effective treatment so that you can return to feeling healthy and balanced again.
During your initial consultation our Naturopaths take a detailed case history, run various in-house tests and can request a comprehensive digestive stool analysis for you if they think this is relevant. Once we have received all your test results back we will put you on a specific treatment plan and diet, to reduce the yeast overgrowth and bring your body back to a state of wellness.
